“I can do it myself!”

CAN I though? Yes, of course I can, “Do all things through Christ who gives me strength”, but in a faith built on surrendering my will to His best for me, I’m constantly asking myself, “What exactly am I trying to do? Is this me or Him? How come this is so hard?” Or lately my favorite, “Holy cow, I think it’s actually getting harder…I’m missing something…wonder how long before He gets out the 2×4 and I get it’.”

As I place my challenges and the following decisions and actions in front of me for consideration, I often sense only my increasing frustration and confusion. Thankfully, it’s at this point The Spirit reminds me that He is not a god of confusion. He says to hand it over, and if I’m feeling confused it’s not from Him.

As I attempt stillness, my best effort at hearing His voice, I realize: self. I can do it myself. It’s our perceived “selves” and the identities we’ve come into agreement with as individuals that the accuser uses to trip us up.

Yesterday while listening to an audiobook from one of my favorite authors, I heard, “Identity precedes purpose.” It stopped me in my tracks and I listened again. Woah. When we mis-identify as anything but fully known and loved children of God, confusion near our root, at our identity level ensues. We strive to further the interests of our misperceived identity, rather than seek His good, pleasing, perfect will. We’re frustrated at what we cannot achieve…or perhaps at what we actually do in our blindness.

If you’re frustrated, discouraged, and confused, maybe ask yourself, “What am I trying to do? Why? Have I asked Him if He’s aligned or has a different plan all together?” His will is always best, and as we align with His will, He will align our desire with His best.

He’s gentle and desires to teach us. Learn from Him today. When you catch yourself going solo, be gentle with you too and let Him know you’re ready try again.

Come to me all who are burdened and weary and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matt 11:29
